The Power of the Mastermind

I belong to a number of groups.

Yoga/Pilates’ Class. Being part of this group helps me improve my health. The shared giggles and groans keep it fun.

Love in Action Class. This Sunday morning class connects me with others who enjoy studying God’s Word and serving others. Being a large group enables us to make a significant difference to the needs of others throughout our church and community.

Worship Team. This is where I’m connected with other musicians who lead worship at church. Specialized technicians ensure that we have power for our instruments and that the sound is perfectly balanced. The individual instruments and voices come together to make incredible music.

Sunday Lunch Group. This is a group of two married couples and one friend who lost his wife from Alzheimer’s disease. Every Sunday and sometimes in-between, we eat lunch with these long-time friends and do life together. Our party of five is a constant source of encouragement and support.

The Mental Cleanse Mastermind. This is where I connect with other people who want More-Better-Different for their lives. No matter what has happened throughout my week, I know that this is where I can get recharged and refocused.

These weekly lessons are based on a particular chapter of Think and Grow Rich, but they are far more than a recapitulation of Napoleon Hill’s Wealth Principles. We learn from writing our own lessons, but sometimes the real a-ha comes from reading the lessons of others. When I feel stuck, it may be that my breakthrough comes from reading the insights of another lesson.

Individually these lessons shine like Diamonds and benefit anyone who is on the journey of improving their life.

However, when you consider that this Forum captures not only our Weekly lessons, but also archives the lessons of 50-100 people, 52 weeks a year, for the past five years or so, this Forum is really a Diamond Mine.

When I was a senior in college I enrolled in a class required for elementary education majors. The first day of Science Methods the professor told us that our assignment was to answer the question, “What is life?” We had to create a self-sustaining, living environment and then “prove” our theory.

As a college student, I had bought into the illusion that I was on the yellow brick road to success. After all, I was proficient at regurgitating the answers that gave me an A on tests. But this class made my head spin; I was totally out of my comfort zone! There were NO textbooks; just our minds.

It was the most UNCOMFORTABLE class I ever experienced --and the one I remember the most. This professor was more interested in developing Critical Thinking Skills in his students, than in test scores.

Many people look at the book “Think and Grow Rich,” arch their eyebrows and give a slight chuckle to the book’s title. They dismiss the book without realizing they are holding a book that has helped many people improve their lives.

Some people read page after page searching for the “Secret.” They finish the last chapter still confused.

The secret is simple. So simple that Hill titles the opening chapter with the secret spelled out crystal clear.

“THOUGHTS ARE THINGS.”

But sometimes it is that which is simple that confounds. For those of us who have a stronghold of limiting beliefs, we want to make it “hard.” Then we can blame our parents, our education, where we lived, what we ate for dinner, or whatever else we want to blame…instead of taking responsibility for the real reason of our under-earning lives.

If we can “Think and Grow Rich” then the opposite is also true. We can “Not Think and Be Poor.” (Either Default Thinking-which is apathy OR Full blown Negative Thinking. Neither will create wealth!)

You see, it all comes down to our thoughts. God created us uniquely different from the animals. He gave us a spark of the Divine when He created within us the ability to not only think and dream, but the ability to CONTROL our minds.

Michael Dlouhy teaches, “Control your mind and you will own your life.”

Steve Porter recently shared his personal declaration based on that principle, “I am learning to control my mind so that I can own my life and own my fortune.”

“The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey talks about a principle, “Begin with the End in Mind.” With that valuable principle in mind, let’s flip back to last week’s lesson, where we read Hill’s powerful words in Chapter 15—Outwitting the Six Ghosts of Fear.”

“You have ABSOLUTE control over but one thing, and this is your thoughts. This is the most significant and inspiring of all facts known to man! It reflects man’s divine nature. This DIVINE prerogative is the sole means by which you may control your own destiny. If you fail to control your own mind, you may be sure you will control nothing else…Your mind is your spiritual estate! Protect and use it with the care to which divine royalty is entitled. You were given a will-power for this purpose….Mind control is the result of self-discipline and habit. You either control your mind or it controls you. There is no half-way compromise.”

So here’s the million dollar question I ask myself:

Are my thoughts leading me to Success or are they leading me to Failure?

It’s completely MY choice. I have the power to change my destructive thought patterns by saying Self-Talk and by taking Action. (BTW: No one can change them for me!) I feed my mind only that which is positive and nutritious and STARVE it from anything that holds me captive from attaining the life I desire.

My mind is my spiritual estate. A royal treasure! That, my friends, is worth learning to control!

So I too declare:

I am committed to controlling my mind, so that I may own my life, and own my fortune.

I’ve sat in my dark car in freezing weather to be on these calls. I’ve bribed grandchildren to keep them quiet for a few minutes so that I could read my lesson on these calls. I arranged my work schedule so that Wednesdays were free just so I could be here.

You see, this is where my heart is. I love to feel the energy from the others here and especially hear the insights from Michael Dlouhy and the many brilliant leaders who show up here faithfully.

I love to witness the tremendous growth of people as they write lessons week after week. I love to hear people begin to find their voice and speak up.

Leadership in the making!

I admit it—I love organization. The words “Put it back where it belongs” were drilled into me when I was a kid. Apparently, the training stuck, because I like to live in a fairly organized house, have a fairly organized desk, and live a fairly organized life.

I’m not a compulsive neat freak, but I admit that too much clutter drives me crazy. I totally "get it" when people tell me they have to organize their desk before they can tackle a major task. My own desk has a magical way of getting buried with paperwork and it sidetracks me from doing what I need to do. Taking a few moments to straighten and file brings me a sense of calm. Ahhh….

The challenge with Organization is that because I’m predominately a Blue Personality, it’s easy for me to get ten things going on at one time. My computer desk disappears under the multiple projects that I’m working on. Current books I’m reading are stacked in a pile off to the side. Fluorescent sticky notes are plastered everywhere. I admit that I get busy doing numerous things at one time—and forget to look at the sticky note reminders. So much for multi-tasking.

(Most Blues will relate to this. However, my husband, who is Green, never writes anything down on a sticky note, especially a fluorescent one.)

Several weeks ago my son asked me if I could help him with office work for his business. It is growing faster than he planned and he realized he needed extra support ASAP. It’s an ideal situation for me because it gives me the opportunity to work from home and have a flexible schedule.

So now my Organized Planning has gone to a whole notha level.

There’s an old saying that if you want something done, ask a busy person.

I guess there’s some truth to that because in these past several weeks, I’m amazed at what I’ve learned and accomplished.

All the computer skills I’ve learned through Mentoring For Free are serving me well. Perhaps even more importantly, is the mindset that I can do more than I ever thought possible. The ability to figure out a business website has been easy as well as other basic computer skills I’ve had to master.

Thank goodness that I’ve continued to expand my computer skills set in the past several years through Mentoring for Free!

Even more importantly, Mentoring for Free has helped me develop critical thinking skills. I’ve learned new marketing skills and creative ways to connect with people. In fact, learning new things has become a way of life.

It’s a fresh reminder that the new tools we are constantly learning in MFF, especially the ability to Mastermind, are extremely valuable. Where else in the world can you get free training no matter what your profession?

When you drill down deep, it all comes back to what you believe about yourself. That’s where the value of the Mental Cleanse comes in. Many of us here acknowledge that these lessons are like oxygen to us. Taking the time to write them not only sharpens our communication skills, but it keeps us moving forward in our lives.

And that, my friends, is so much fun! Who doesn’t want to live a life that is brimming full with new opportunities!

As you read this chapter on Organized Planning, don’t be overwhelmed by the list of the Thirty-One Causes of Failure. First time I read that list I saw myself in each one. Now I simply grab one of those brilliant ideas and work it into my life.

The second item on that list says that 98% of the people do not have a Central Purpose or a Definite Goal. 98%! Instead of discovering their true purpose most people get stuck in the clutter of their lives. They spend their whole lives getting ready to get ready. Sadly, many of them die with the music still in them.

But then there’s the 2%!

These are the people who know their Purpose and are diligent in their planning and pursuit. They are not perfect. They stumble and fall, but they always get up. They have bad days occasionally, but they never lose sight of their Perfect Day and their WHY.

The 2% have desks that get a little cluttered—but they clean it off, file what needs to be saved, throw away what’s no longer needed, and keep moving forward!

So here’s the question:

“Are you living like the 98% or like the 2%?”

Chapter 4—Autosuggestion

Many of us begin our journey in network marketing by striving to learn everything we can about our company. We study the product line and the comp plan. We learn how to navigate our back office and how to read downline reports. We listen to company calls and are motivated to build a successful business.

Then we get stuck.

We clean off our desk and organize paperwork over and over and over again. “Getting Ready to Get Ready” becomes an excuse for doing nothing.

For others, being stuck becomes a paralysis. Fear shows up in physical and emotional ways (nausea, depression, excessive fatigue, confusion) and overrides logical reasoning.

Learning MORE about the products and the business does not get one “unstuck.”

The answer is retraining the Subconscious Mind through the power of Self-Talk.

Before I began my journey of Personal Growth, I would have told you this was all airy fairy stuff, but there’s an old saying, “You don’t know what you don’t know.” Even though I believed fully in transforming your mind through Scripture, I was completely ignorant of the power of the Subconscious. I thought that I just needed more training or information.

But learning more Information doesn’t necessarily get one “unstuck” from lifelong patterns.

So how does one get unstuck?

The secret is simple and costs nothing but your time. You must retrain what’s in your Subconscious Mind through the repetition of positive affirmations and declarations. State it as though it’s already true.

Don’t let the word “simple” misguide you. Repeating Self-Talk hundreds of times each day is not rocket science, but it’s not easy. It requires the utmost commitment, focus, and perseverance. Belief will come the more you say it.

Here’s one of my Self-Talks:

“I am an Inspiring, Achieving, and Prosperous woman.”

If your Self-Talk makes your stomach do flip flips, it’s probably the perfect one. When I started saying this Declaration, I certainly didn’t feel that I was Inspiring, Achieving or Prosperous. Far from it. But now, after saying those words for many months, they feel like a perfect fit. It’s like a contract I have with myself.

My business Self Talk is the one we hear frequently on MFF calls:

“I am having fun attracting and sponsoring Leaders into my business, easily and consistently, through education and teamwork.”

I’ve known people who have agonized over what words to use in their Self-Talk. They get stuck because they think they have to have the perfect words. The only thing that really matters is to Do It.

Michael Dlouhy suggests that we say our Self-Talk 400 times per day. I’ve never counted out how many times I actually say it, but I know that whenever I wake up during the night, my Self-Talk is going through my mind.

It’s as though the power of the Positive words are washing away the negative that has built up throughout my lifetime. The neuron pathways are cleansed and re-magnitized with powerful, life-changing patterns.

So for those of us seeking to grow a successful network marketing business, it makes sense to intentionally rewire our brains with Positive thoughts. After all, this is far more important than reshuffling the papers on our desk or studying the molecular composition of our products.

Ever had a light bulb moment? A revelation of TRUTH.

Truth is often uncomfortable. I say I want it, but the reality is I often avoid it by making excuses or rationalizations. My experience is that when I ask God to show me what holds me back in my life, He always delivers.

Yesterday I was reading Brian Klemmer's essay in "It's Time For Network Marketing." He shares about the power of the Subconscious. Coincidence? I think not.

Here's the section that was my light bulb moment:

"These Subconscious belief systems are like colored Sunglasses through which we view life. These beliefs often develop so early on that we can't recall being without them. These Sunglasses are our belief systems around commitment, trust, and who we think we are. They end up limiting our goals or even preventing us from having goals at all. They determine how we listen or don't listen. They determine whether we prospect people or not, and they impact how we prospect.

When you breakthrough these Sunglasses and have a REVELATION, it affects not just your network marketing business, but every aspect of your life.

Your network marketing business exposes these belief systems.

As long as your sunglasses are making most of your decisions, you are not in control of your life. You know you are not in control when you cannot produce the results you say you want." (Brian Klemmer)

That passage brought up all kinds of emotion in me. But the last sentence was the one that both made me angry and relieved at the same time.

My Subconscious Mind is still controlling me. That means I'm allowing negative programming, (aka LIES) to control me. Ouch!!!

The Good News is that by continued diligence at Self-Talk and Forward Action...my Subconscious can be rewired.

"When I can produce the results I say I want...." That will be proof positive that my Subconscious Mind has been rewired to at least some degree.

Klemmer goes on to say a statement I heard him say many times,

"There is no fairer way to gauge anything than by results--often harsh, always fair.... That is the greatest thing about network marketing."


The Truth sometimes hurts, but ultimately, it sets you FREE.

Chapter 10--Power of the Mastermind

On Saturday night's Coaches Corner call Michael asked the question,

"What do you believe is one of the main judgments people have?"

I knew the answer because I've had this prejudice all of my life. Perhaps it was in my upbringing or maybe my own self-devised programs, but I've always felt "less than" whenever I'm around wealthy people. Successful people were smarter than me, more responsible than me, and definitely MORE than me.

Several years ago I was appointed to serve on an Ohio state-wide committee to improve kindergarten readiness. There were about 50 highly successful individuals from various educational and state agencies: school superintendents, state School Board members, deans of universities, and even a former governor. I was the sole representative of faith based schools.

I was incredibly intimidated by all these successful people. Lots of time was spent in the bathroom before I could even enter the meeting room. Basically I jumped to the conclusion that because of their prestigious titles, they had generous salaries, lived in beautiful homes, and drove luxury cars. I judged them as being superior to me and that affected my entire experience.

Hearing Michael lead the Mastermind discussion transported me back to that grueling experience.

Where else has my prejudice towards people with money shown up in my life? How has it held me back from achieving my own dreams of success?

Probably more than I can imagine.

Last night I was clicking through old pictures on my computer and saw the first snapshot I had taken with Michael and Linda. I remember thinking at that moment "Why in the world do these successful people want to spend time with me?" I knew they owned their life because of network marketing. I wanted that as well, but was clueless as to how to make it happen.

Over the past four years Michael and Linda have become like family to me. I have been in their home and looked at Michael's Vision Board. I see the belief he has in my success. In ALL of our success.

Being in a Mastermind requires a Decision. You can choose to stay stuck in your ways OR you can be willing to transform those parts of you that hold you back. That requires some transparency and vulnerability, which although uncomfortable, is also liberating.

I choose to let go of the Prejudice that holds me back. Instead I will use my Desire for success to be as gasoline thrown onto a fire.

Home Business Success Secret Revealed On Setting a BHAG Goal

This is the home business success secret revealed on setting a BHAG goal for yourself written by my good friend Margi Starr. If everybody followed this blueprint when building their home based business from one pin level to the next then they would be on their way to massive success! Several years ago I set a BHAG goal for myself. BHAG stands for a Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal. You know it’s a BHAG when people laugh at you. You know it’s a BHAG when you wake up in the morning thinking, “What did I get myself into???” You know it’s a BHAG when you it takes a while to wrap your brain around where to start.


When I told people that I was going to climb Pike’s Peak, people laughed. My cousin announced to our family, “Margi won’t be able to do it.” My fitness instructor raised his eyebrows and said, “Really???” I planned my strategy carefully. Using the internet, I found a fitness program that would help me get into shape.


Walking one mile gave me one point. Two miles equaled 2 points. Running up the stairs of a stadium was worth 3 or 4 points depending on the number of stairs. According to this particular fitness program, I needed a minimum of 24 points per week for 8 weeks, otherwise, my mountain climbing adventure could be disastrous. I aimed for 28-30 points per week of walking and climbing. I even signed up for a spin class to build up my lungs and endurance even more.


I sought the advice of people who had some athletic experience. One friend, who had run some cross country in high school, suggested that we meet at 5:45 AM 3 mornings a week to get in some miles. Those early morning sessions were extremely valuable. Over the nine weeks, my husband and three of my best friends laced up their walking shoes and joined me. On Saturdays I worked up to walking 10 miles without stopping. I would start out alone and before long, someone would call me and say, “Hey, where are you? I’m going to join you for a couple of miles.” Then someone else would come alongside me and walk a mile or so. The miles melted away under my feet building my endurance and confidence. This past weekend I once again entered the scary, but exhilarating world of the BHAG.


I set a goal for myself that has me ready to throw up and yet has me so excited that I can’t sleep. This time it’s a network marketing goal. I have reviewed the charts that I used for climbing Pike’s Peak. Each week had a specific amount of activities I needed to do. Although I accomplished massive action each week, it was all broken down to small activities each day. But the secret was in my consistency.

Whenever I thought about slacking off, I saw a 14,100 foot mountain looming ahead of me and it jolted me back into action. So tonight I made a detailed Ten-Week Action Plan for achieving a significant network marketing goal which includes: • Daily self talk • Daily personal development • Phone calls to my warm market • Social media posts and relationship building to get downloads of STS • Writing daily blogs to get downloads of STS • Visiting businesses that could benefit from my product(s) • Do presentations both with individuals and small groups • Doing at least one larger scale events. • Working with my team and teaching them to duplicate what I do. • Being Accountable to my own mentors and peers. I have a target goal for the number of Customers and Distributors who will find me and join me. I have some specific dates as to when I achieve the mini-goals of Pin Levels that I need to achieve prior to March 31.


It all comes down to having a Plan and then working the Plan. The Plan will probably change. That’s okay. But now that it’s down on paper in bite-size action steps, I can better SEE me achieving my goal. Organized Planning takes a BHAG and brings it to life.
